Patricia Ann Shaut-Hancock "Bama"

Patricia Ann Shaut-Hancock, “Bama” born on March 3, 1934, died on Tuesday, February 17, 2015, in Mesa, Arizona. She was born in St. Johnsville, New York, and moved to Mesa, Arizona, in 1950. She was a mother and a sister but her fondest role was being a grandmother to 9. She loved taking her grandkids to the Dinosaur Museum in downtown Mesa when they were young. She also loved the Native American Pow wows held in Mesa and would take her grandkids there. And she was fun. She had a constant smile and cheery disposition. She rolled in the waves in Southern California and would take walks in her beloved Adirondacks at “camp” during her month long summer visits back home in upstate New York. She never missed a band or orchestra concert or play that her grandchildren were involved in. Always involved in her grandchildren’s lives, their friends had the pleasure of knowing Bama as well. She loved books, especially when it came to reading to her grandchildren. She never met a children’s book she didn’t like. She was always writing notes to herself about what to talk to about with her grandkids or kids. And cards. She loved to get and give cards. She would spend as much time as it took to find the perfect card for that special family member or friend, and then mark them up and underline meaningful passages to make the cards more personalized. She saved every card that she got from her grandchildren and kids. They were her treasures. She was a great cook. Her ba-seghetti sauce was legend as well as her Black Magic cake, spinach dip and pasta salad. Although she didn’t see much of the world in person, she traveled in books, magazines and by watching PBS. She was interested in many cultures, especially the Native American culture. She loved Native American jewelry. She worked as a Surgical Tech for 26 years at Mesa Lutheran hospital, until she retired. Her spunky attitude and sense of humor endeared her to her co-workers, her family and even her family’s friends. She was loved. She is survived by her six children; Randy Hancock, Tressa Done (Robert), Amy Hancock, Jody Reed (Danny), David Hancock (Amy), and Tracy Tipton (Rick), her loving sister Barbara Schwed, 9 grandchildren; Kelly Reed, Tony Reed (Amy), Michael Done, Emily Hale (Steven), R. Cole Tipton, Truman Tipton, Quinn Tipton, Andrew Hancock and Samantha Hancock and three great-grandchildren; Kimber Reed, Winston Hale & Tommy Hale. Please bring a flower from your yard, or someone else's - she would love it. Services will be held at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints 3440 S Signal Butte, Mesa, AZ 85212 Saturday February 21, 2015. Visitation is from 9:15 to 9:45am and the funeral service starts at 10:00 am.
